DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Dean Foley\nOrganisation: Barayamal \nIndigenous unemployment is currently at 21%\, an increase of 4.3 percentage points since 2008 — and 4x times the current non-Indigenous unemployment rate. \nDisempowerment and lack of opportunity has led to the Indigenous community in Australia having the highest rate of suicide of any community in the world. \nIndigenous businesses are the high growth employment generation and solution to close the disadvantage gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. \nGreater opportunities and more jobs produce happier families and less crime. \nDean’s presentation will explore how Indigenous entrepreneurship can deliver positive change and contribute significantly to the COAG Closing the Gap initiative – maintaining\, valuing and strengthening Indigenous cultures and improving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s skills and employment outcomes. \nAbout the Presenter \nDean served five years in the Royal Australian Air Force before founding Australia’s Indigenous business accelerator\, Barayamal – now known as a world leader in Indigenous entrepreneurship. \nAn action-oriented entrepreneur\, Microsoft RAP Advisory Board Member and proud Kamilaroi Man\, Dean grew up within the Aboriginal community in Gunnedah\, NSW. \nHe is an Industry Mentor at Griffith University\, founder of the Indigipreneur Podcast and Give Backathon\, and ran Australia’s first ever Indigenous Start-up Weekend. \nBarayamal is a 100% Indigenous owned and managed charity which supports Indigenous entrepreneurs to achieve their dreams and create a better world for all who live in it. Barayamal means ‘Black Swan’ in Kamilaroi language and the bird was first seen by Europeans in 1697. Before then\, Europeans had only known of a white swan. In this instance\, the black swan represents Indigenous entrepreneurs who have not been noticed in the world for their innovative businesses. Barayamal plans to show the world that Indigenous entrepreneurs exist and they can also build global businesses. \nMissed a webinar?
